10 x 10 challenge

The 10 x 10 challenge was created by blogger Lee (the Bee) Vosburgh, also known as ‘StyleBee’ in 2015. The idea is to create a micro, capsule wardrobe for 10 days, using only 10 select items. 

Looking into my wardrobe and re-evaluating what I have has become really important to me. Being a previous hoarder of clothing after working in retail management for almost 10 years and getting mega discounts/ freebies/ buying too much for no real reason, I’ve decided to stop buying so many clothes and focus on what I already have.

I’ve also started minimalising my wardrobe in general. I know it’s not for everyone, but it’s so refreshing to not have my wardrobe and drawers bursting at the seams! I wrote a blog post back in November about ‘Black Friday sales’ and how we’re marketed to in such a way that makes us feel we need to consume more, rather than appreciate what we already have.


So, the concept is pretty simple really:

  • Choose 10 items from your current wardrobe
  • Challenge yourself to style these items over 10 days
  • Style them differently for each day

When does the challenge start?

StyleBee has started this seasons 10 x 10 on the 19th of January, 2018. Though that doesn’t mean you have to stick to these specific dates. I’m starting up a wee bit late to the party, so consider this as day 1! If you want to join in for the rest of the event, or even just try it for half the amount of time, you can use these hashtags created by Lee: #WINTER10x10  #StyleBee10x10 and #UnFancyRemix .

What’s included?

Think core items! In StyleBee’s guidelines she includes a coat in, but I’ve added that as extra as my coats change this time of year depending on the weather (ie is it freezing cold/ pissing down with rain/ suddenly feels like spring?). What I also haven’t included is my gym gear. So just think what 10 items you can mix and match over 10 days for your daily wear.

I work in an office during the week, but my job is semi-creative, so I tend not to be in strict office wear as it’s just not me, y’know?

This is what I went for:

  • 2 pairs of shoes
  • 2 pairs of jeans (1x blue, 1x black), which can be smart or casual
  • 1 smart grey trousers
  • 1 plain white shirt, which I bought from a charity shop years ago and it still serves me well
  • 1 white, linen t-shirt (I have one in black too, but wanted to use the white for the challenge)
  • 1 vintage denim shirt (was my mum’s in the 80’s)
  • 1 blazer
  • 1 navy and white, log sleeve striped top (bought from H&M about 10 years ago)

What’s not included?

As previously mentioned, I didn’t include coats as the weather is so unpredictable here! I also didn’t include gym wear, just clothes to wear the majority of the day. So your accessories can count as extras.

Other things not included:

  • Scarves
  • Belts
  • Bags
  • Jewellery
  • Glasses (I have prescription glasses)
  • other accessories – think hats, gloves, mittens etc

Why bother?

I really wanted to take on the challenge to see what I could do with very few items. It’s quite liberating and my style has become more minimal over the years anyway. I like to add pops of colour here and there, but I generally wear different belts, have different bags, coats, jewellery which is how I style up my looks.
