I recall going to the first Handmade Fair with my dear mum in 2014 and being so excited about the prospect of being surrounded by a bunch of like-minded, creative people. As a big birthday was coming up for her I decided to splash out and go for some VIP tickets. The experience was ah-mazing! We had our own VIP area (with the other VIP’s), an afternoon tea, a goodie bag and also access to a cloakroom which is always a bonus!
What I really love about The Handmade Fair is that it’s so different from other craft events I’ve been too. Not only does it have amazing craft stalls where you can buy wool, books, fabrics etc, it has the added bonus of the super theatre and master classes. The super theatre usually has a limited amount of seats which you book in advance which one you want to attend, you then get schooled by a professional in the bis and hopefully leave the tent feeling inspired (I sure did!). The master classes were so much fun! It’s great to potter around the stalls and watch the super theatre, however you can’t beat a bit of tangible, hands-on crafting! That year you could decorate cupcakes, lamp shades, easy make cushions and so much more.
The great thing about crafting is that it really inspires you to sometimes make something out of nothing. They also have upcycling workshops which are really inspiring and ideas for those on a budget. Crafting doesn’t have to be expensive and you can easily brighten up your home (or your wardrobe) for a fraction of the cost in some high street stores. It’s also proven to be great for mindfulness and your mental health. In 2016 the Telegraph reported that activities such as crocheting, knitting, baking, jam making and more can make you feel happier, calmer and more energetic the day after doing these activities (Ough, 2016)
